November 1756

A List of the Inhabitants of the City of Albany in America with the Number of Troops they can Quarter conveniently within the Stockade and what they can Quarter in Case of necessity together with the fireplaces in Each house and Rooms without Fire, also what Rooms were occupied by the Respective Families as it appeared on a street Enquiry made in November 1756 . . . . . To which is added an Alphabetical List in Order more readily to find the, also an abstract of the number of Officers and men the Town can Quarter.

This document entitled (or under the heading): "To His Excellency John Earl of Loudoun Commander in Chief of all his Majesty Forces in North America" or ". . . a street Enquiry made in November 1756" is in the "Loudoun Americana" collection at the Henry E. Huntington Library in San Marino California. The Earl of Loudoun's tenure in America and in Albany in particular produced a number of documents that provide windows on wartime Albany. These are chronicled by Stanley M. Pargellis in Lord Loudoun in North America (New Haven, 1933). See also his edition of wartime documents entitled Military Affairs in North America, 1748-1765; selected documents from the Cumberland papers in Windsor Castle. Substantial explanatory material presents a British/Imperial perspective.

This comprehensive listing of Albany householders in 1756 is one of the most basic and important survey documents used by the Colonial Albany Project to identify and begin to comprehend members of the early Albany community.

The names shown on this transcription retain the spelling of the manuscript document as closely as possible. Names were compiled (filled out) by comparing the listing to the index. In no cases, did we modernize or streamline spelliings. However, the biographical links identify each individual. The British had considerable difficulty comprehending the non English speaking population demographically. Hence, the humorous/outrageous spellings!

Seven columns of numbers following each name specify (from left to right): convenient quarters for officers; quarters for officers on a pinch; convenient quarters for men; quarters for men on a pinch; number of fire places; rooms without fire; rooms the family occupies.

N.B. Officers quarters are hearby understood to be Single Rooms.

GH denotes the marginal notation "Good House" or "Very Good House!"
